According to Apple’s website an event has been scheduled for 9/9/24. Presumably, the event will announce availability for iPhone 16 and iOS 18.
For what it’s worth, I’ve been running iOS 18 betas on my iPhone for a month or so. While not without minor glitches, beta has been remarkably stable. There may be one more beta release before 9/9, which (given the timing) would also be the release candidate.
The new dedicated camera button is interesting. While certainly not a groundbreaking feature I would find it useful.
I primarily use Android myself but I need to replace a household iPhone. The rumored SE 4th gen might be a good fit if it’s released sometime next year.
Agreed on the SE. At that time I will hope to find a bargain on the current generation (3rd) to replace my aging 2nd Gen. Really like the size, hearing that the new SE will be much larger.
I like giving TidBITS a plug because I’ve been a reader since TidBITS started as an email newsletter for Mac users (long before iPhone and well before Apple became the tech industry behemoth it is today) and because TidBITS uses Discourse for its forums as we do.
On a side note, since it might be of some interest to Android users as well, RCS on iOS appears it will be hit or miss in terms of carrier support. Generally, it looks like it will be available on the big 3 MNOs proper, most of their flanker brands and a relative few independent MVNOs at launch on September 16, 2024. Any iPhone running iOS 17 is capable of updating to iOS 18.
@cbwahlstrom, if your son is still with UScellular (not to be confused with US Mobile), their Apple carrier bundle looks like it is RCS enabled for iOS 18.
He’s still with UScellular, but I don’t know whether he has IOS 18 yet. I haven’t gotten any messages from him over RCS yet. We don’t have any issues messaging each other as it is, so I’m not going to try to mess with anything.
