Apple MacBook Pro M2 compatible external CD/DVD drive recommendations?

I have a MacBook Pro M2 and really miss having CD/DVD capabilities. I want to look into an ext. drive but keep finding fragmented info on compatibility. I’d like to find the most direct hookup without jumping incompatibility hoops. These have shown up in a few places:

ASUS ZenDrive U9M

LG GP65 Slim

I’m just want to see some movies occasionally (don’t care about blue-ray), or listen to some old mix CDs of music, maybe use for additional backup of documents too. So needs to be RW too. I have not upgraded to Tahoe or updated Safari. I’m on Sequoia :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Thanks for any and all experiences with this.

Hi @Bestwire,

I own an LG GP65 and can confirm compatibility with macOS Sequoia and, likely, Tahoe as well. Some of the software included with the drive by LG is Windows only but no additional software is required for use with macOS. In other words, macOS itself supports the drive.

Likewise, I’ve not yet updated to macOS Tahoe on my daily driver Mac. I do have Tahoe installed on a secondary Mac. Mostly, Tahoe would be OK for my daily use but I’m waiting on Apple to work out some bugs in Tahoe’s Music app.

I would, however, suggest installing any updates to Sequoia - the latest is 15.7.3 - and keeping Safari updated. These are security patches.

Thanks for the advice on the drive!

I had read several places that Safari got buggy if you upgraded it without upgrading to Tahoe, because it was probably trying to look to Tahoe for things. There is a huge amount of people who have chosen not to upgrade any of their Apple products. All those who had to wipe Tahoe off their Macs and rebuild

You’re welcome!

I keep Safari updated under Sequoia and have noticed no such bugginess.

A huge amount of vocal people on Reddit and other social media perhaps. I’m not sure those folks are representative of Apple’s user base as a whole. Were it not for one specific bug in Tahoe’s Music app mentioned in my previous post, I’d upgrade to Tahoe.

It’s always best practice to have a complete backup of one’s existing system before attempting a major operating system upgrade. I’ve long used Carbon Copy Cloner and/or SuperDuper! and an external drive to backup my Macs. In the event an upgrade doesn’t turn out as hoped, it’s simple enough - albeit time consuming - to revert. In fact - having recently fired up SuperDuper! - I see I’ve been a registered user for 20 years!

Gonna stay with Sequoia for now. Been talking to a couple IT folks about the same, and seems prudent for the time being to stay put.
