Hackers leak 2.7 billion data records with Social Security numbers

I’ve never before heard of “National Public Data”. I’m not always a fan of government regulation but it’s past time guardrails be set up around those engaged in aggregating and selling such data.

I’ve frozen mine.

Hey @BillG,

Thanks for the link! Apparently, as suggested by multiple online sources, the breached NPD data is old.

In my case, the data includes an incorrect birthday, the most recent address is out of date by 20 years and my childhood telephone number (childhood for me was a long time ago). The linked site masks all but the last two digits (which are accurate) of my SSN.

Anyway, AT&T is already paying for me to have credit monitoring due to their data breach, so I’ll just keep an eye out there.

Thanks, @BillG,
The information that comes up for me and my family members is unfortunately too accurate. I’ve frozen all my credit with all three bureaux, and have instructed my family members to do the same.

While I have credit monitoring in place, I’d much rather prevent trouble (as much as possible) than have to clean it up after being notified of a problem.

Yes all the stuff that came up about me was accurate too. Very scary

I checked. Most of the entries were accurate. There was even an entry for when an attempt was made to hijack one of my credit card accounts abpout 20 years back. The attempt failed, but the listing is there. Lifelock (account provided by my employer) sent me a panic-gram about this. The referenced NPD.

I’ll be applying extreme refrigeration to my various credit records. :ice_cube:

Getting your credit frozen online can be tough, all 3 credit agencies seem to be so busy requests fail. And don’t get me started on the phone queues.

Apparently, National Public Data is local to me. Their alleged address is 11555 Heron Bay Boulevard, Coral Springs, FL. Coral Springs is a neighboring city to the one I currently live in. It gets better, the address seems to be co-working or virtual office space.

A supposed corporate parent, Jerico Pictures, Inc., is registered as a corporation in Florida with an address that looks like it is a mailbox at a UPS store.

The sole corporate officer listed also lives in Coral Springs about a 10 minute drive for me. If anyone would like me to deliver a message to him, let me know. :rage:

Here’s an unexpected twist and something for anyone to keep in mind if, like me and @BillG, you’ve frozen your credit with the credit bureaus.

I was trying to add a credit card to Apple Wallet to use Apple Pay on an iPhone and kept getting a failure. I called the bank and they insisted there was nothing “on their end” that was causing the failure. I talked to someone at their digital wallet division and they could not think of any reason the card would not add to Apple Wallet.

Each time I tried and failed, I’d get a text message from the bank alerting me that a charge of $0.00 had been declined from Visa Provisioning Service.

The people at the bank had no idea why that “charge” was being declined.

As I Googled the term “Visa Provisioning Service” something about Equifax caught my eye and it dawned on me that perhaps my credit freeze was the problem. So I unfroze my credit with all three bureaus. After a couple of hours I was able to successfully add the card to Apple Wallet. :tada:

Another thing to do. Mine was breached. Am concerned I’ll forget to unfreeze them when needed. More passwords + read that one of the companies sending frequent spam emails trying to get you to upgrade (wonder if there’s an unsubscribe).

Also, just received an email from a law firm about Oracle class action lawsuit settlement. Of course, thought it was spam so before opening email looked up. It’s widely covered in news. I wondered how law firm got my email but understand Oracle has my complete “dossier.” With so many people involved, any payout likely minimal (except big bucks to attorneys). However, just received a larger than expected payout for having had all my medical info hacked.

Hi @Switchboard

I do see some marketing emails in my trash folder from Equifax, and yes, there’s an unsubscribe button, as required by law.

Yep, it is yet another thing to do, but so is locking our cars, if you’re old enough, like me, to remember leaving cars unlocked. My Daddy used to leave his key in the ignition, too.
