Helium Mobile has new plans

Helium Mobile dropped new plans this morning including a “free” option:

The Infinity (“unlimited”) plan is an effective $10/month price increase from Helium’s previous “unlimited” offering though the new “unlimited” includes 36 GB of high speed data whereas high speed data was previously 28 GB.

The Air plan offers 10 GB of high speed data for $15.month, which is twice what Mint offers at that price and does not require a multi-month commitment. Helium, like Mint, uses T-Mobile’s network.

For what it’s worth, I’m a Helium Mobile subscriber using an older “unlimited” plan for $5/month. My part of South Florida was Helium’s initial test market.
I participate in what Helium refers to as Discovery Mapping. Doing so earns crypto, which I then use to pay for service making it effectively free. Helium’s new plans do not provide for earning crypto but, instead, provide “cloud points”.

For now, it seems Helium’s new plans are available by invite only, which one may get by adding their email address to Helium’s waitlist. Apparently, a referral code, allows one to skip the line. If there’s interest, my referral code is available at Referrals

Since posting this, I’ve noted there seems to be a requirement one provide a scanned copy of government ID and a selfie to sign up for the new plans. This was not a requirement for previous Helium Mobile plans. For what it’s worth, Helium says it does not store the information.

The above feels like an invasion of privacy to me but then so too does CVS scanning my driver’s license when picking up a relative’s prescriptions or Best Buy doing so when initiating a return at the store. I don’t mind proving I am who I say I am for certain transactions but do not like that, generally, the information is stored.

Anyway, caveat emptor.
