I’ve put my old Extend Home adapter to work with extremely affordable service through VoIP.ms, to have a home phone using my Google Voice number.
If anyone is interested, I’ll write up a how-to, and answer any questions that come along.
I’d love to know if anyone else re-purposed their Extend Home adapter. Thanks to @rolandh’s suggestion and advice, I was able to advocate for getting them all unlocked, and even had the honor of being the employee who did the unlocking. It would be fun to learn if the extra work actually kept any of them out of the landfill!
Of course, I re-purposed my Extend Home adapter! I’m using a $1 per month phone number from Callcentric as a forwarding target for both my GV and mobile numbers. Though I miss the integration of RW’s Extend Home service, this arrangement does have the advantage of allowing for multiple numbers to ring the adapter.
Anveo, Callcentric and VoIP.ms are the big 3 in terms of DIY VoIP service providers. For those new to VoIP, I would suggest either Callcentric or VoIP.ms. Anveo has a steeper learning curve.
I haven’t gone through the process of unlocking mine, and of course no longer have access to any of the instructions in the Community.
Is it still possible for me to do that?
My understanding is all units sold by Republic were unlocked. @southpaw, please correct me if I’m wrong about that.
Presuming I’m correct, you would need to factory reset the adapter for the default firmware to download. Details on page 73 of the linked “administration guide”: https://www.grandstream.com/hubfs/Product_Documentation/ht80x_administration_guide.pdf.
Hi @andreas,
@rolandh nailed it! They’ve all been unlocked. You just have to factory reset it, reconnect it to the internet, and give it time to download the latest default software. If you haven’t factory reset it yet, it still has the custom RW software on it.
Cool! Thanks. Glad I didn’t miss the boat on this one.
Thanks for unlocking them, I sold mine on eBay.
