RCS splitting my group chat into 2 groups on new phone

Greetings everyone :waving_hand: Long time, no post

I’m currently using Mint Mobile and recently upgraded from a Motorola Moto G Power 2021 phone to a new Motorola Moto G Power 5G 2024 phone. I have an ongoing group text with myself and 2 siblings which my new phone is splitting into 2 different groups. My brother’s messages are still coming in on the old group, but my sister’s messages are coming in on a new group. I think I have concluded that my sister is sending messages in RCS mode, and my brother is sending regular SMS/MMS messages. I thought I might solve the problem by turning off RSC chats on my new phone, but when I did that I stopped receiving all messages that my sister sent to the group, although I still could receive messages that she sent directly to me.

Does anyone know if there’s a way to adjust the settings on my new phone to allow me to keep all messages from both siblings in the same “group” on my phone without having to ask my sister to turn off the RCS feature on her phone?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Potential Solutions

  1. Check your group messaging settings:
  • Open Google Messages
  • Tap your profile photo or icon
  • Go to Messages settings > Advanced > Group messaging
  • Ensure “Group MMS” is selected as the default
  1. Verify your phone number:
  • In Google Messages settings, go to Advanced
  • Make sure your correct phone number is listed under “Your phone number for messaging”
  • If it’s blank or incorrect, enter your number manually
  1. Clear app data and cache:
  • Go to your phone’s Settings > Apps > Google Messages
  • Tap “Storage”
  • Select “Clear data” and “Clear cache”
  • Restart your phone
  1. Uninstall and reinstall:
  • If the above steps don’t work, try uninstalling Google Messages
