VoIP Provider Shuts Down

A little more than 14 years ago I opened a reseller account with VOIPo. I thought I might form some type of business and sell phone service to others. Well, the idea never really got off the ground, but I did end up providing phone service to some friends and family. Late last week I received notice that my provider, VOIPo, was shutting down with very short notice (I believe it’s tomorrow). I’ve pretty much abandoned my home phone. It sits behind the TV and there’s a second extension somewhere in the bedroom, but we rarely ever use it. I weighed the idea of just letting it go, but what the heck. Might as well have some fun moving stuff to another provider and setting everything up again.

So I set off to do some research at DSLReports to see what VoIP service everyone else is using these days. Except DSLReports apparently went dark early this year and no longer exists. Oh well, as I recall I still had a Callcentric account from 20 or so years ago, but of course that no longer works, either. So I opened a new Callcentric account, put in my info to port three numbers over, and received notice a few hours later that the numbers would port today. At lunch time today I received notice that the numbers had ported over and set up forwarding and new extensions for the numbers. All that’s left is to remember how to configure the analog telephone adapter that’s collecting dust behind my living room television.

Stuff like this didn’t used to be this easy, and I kind of miss when it wasn’t.
